CNC Setup Machinist

Position Summary:

The CNC Setup Machinist is responsible for frequent and efficient setup on a variety of CNC machines for part production.  The machinist must interpret schedules, blueprints and setup sheets to determine production priority, sequence of operations, measurement equipment and tooling needed for each job.  Capable of setting/ adjusting offsets and programs as needed to create a repeatable, conforming part while producing little to no scrap.

Working Relationships:

  • Receives direction from the Machine Shop Manager who provides objectives for safety, productivity, quality and delivery goals.
  • Works with Production Planning and supervision to communicate and execute best approach for production schedule each day.
  • Works with production machinists on jobs throughout the day to ensure parts remain in tolerance following release to production and makes adjustments as needed.
  • Provides feedback and collaborates on safety, productivity and quality improvements with CNC Programmers and Manufacturing Engineering.
  • Shares best practices with other setup machinists to ensure standards are continuously improving.

Critical Skills/ Experience: 

  • Significant experience with setup and operation of a variety of controls used on CNC lathes and mills.
  • Ability to read and write CNC machine programs.
  • Understands complex mechanical drawings and tolerances.
  • Ability to follow process and procedural improvements in a high-mix/ low-volume environment.
  • Ability to perform basic shop math in all units of measure to correctly apply offsets and program modifications.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written or oral form.
  • Ability to frequently lift up to 45 pounds.
